GNU/Linux on the desktop

A quick post about GNU/Linux.

My boss just finished downloading (and installing) Mandriva on his laptop. And of course, he called me over to show off xgl-enabled desktop. Made my officemates drool (gen suddenly remembered the ubuntu cd i gave her). Of course, i already saw xgl in action before, once in a an ex-roommate's laptop, and some videos on youtube. But it's still always awesome to see it live.

I'm starting to believe lately that the Linux on the desktop is about to tip. I have no idea when, but the circumstances around me all points to this fact. Hannah has been using ubuntu (dapper) for the past month, thea has been a linux user ever since High Flyer (their internet cafe) was born, a good friend who, for reasons i can't understand chooses to hide her geeky-ness, has been on archlinux for two years now. Angel is now running ubuntu (edgy) both on her (their) desktop and her vaio laptop (dual boot).

Dang. i forgot my planned ending/conclusion for this post. Oh well, go GNU/Linux! :p

you remember me asking you about ubuntu's capabilities as a webserver? well i'm now just finishing a debian dualboot on my workstation (was thinking if i should put X on it or not). somebody recommended openbsd to me because it's much more secure, kaya lang baka maiyak na talaga ako sa complexity eh. i think it's a huge step for a windows appdev like me.

  3. hehehe. so if you'll be posting screenshots, i hope you install X. (them command line screens wouldn't look as good eh?) peace pare. i'm glad (really) na nagllinux ka na. Resigned na ko dati na di ka man lang magffirefox eh. haha.

hehe. openBSD. i once wanted to be BSD (freeBSD) user, because i thought then that by being one, i'm a step closer to being a mac os x user (being a hybrid os, one part of which is based on BSD).

Looked around the community here in the philippines and the situation then didn't look like so encouraging. It would still be nice though to learn BSD, but for my desktop pref, i think i'm sticking with Linux. (until i can afford a macbook).

    :D

Whoa! Wonder who this is? *shifty eyes*

I'm starting to believe lately that the Linux on the desktop is about to tip...

Methinks it's still a long shot.

In my case, I don't know anyone outside the Hepta Alpha group who uses Linux/UNIX. Your circumstances are just extra-ordinary. :)

I actually tried FreeBSD even before joining the Linux club. One word: Kapoy. :/

P.S. Clicky my name, why doncha?

  8. Btw, thanks for the Happy Birthday Greeting.

*Hugs*. ? hmm, i remember something about that... Ah, the 5 laps that i have to do around the uplb oval before you give me that. :p

  9. Browser "wars" do not really interest me (although I kinda hope that Firefox wins so that fewer web developers make IE-only pages).:D

But anyway, I think it will all boil down to personal preference. I don't believe that Opera (or on a similar note, Linux) is more suited to every user's needs than the more popular alternatives. I just know that I much prefer it. (And I don't think it hurts that I can substantiate that preference.) :)

Because you're a "geek of importance" (whee!), I just thought that it would be really cool if I can get you to convert! Hehe.

If or when you decide to bite, I'd love to battle! (If only to take part in an engaging, intellectual debate and see where I may be mistaken.) I'd happily kick Opera down the gutter if I see that something else is "better". :)

P.S. Yeah, I remember that running-around-the-oval thing! And the vodka! *grins* Again, Happy Birthday! Wish you all the good things in life and may happy moments outnumber the bad. :)

    Cheerios,
    Closet Geek
